Upcoming March events!

I'm quite excited about March reading.  There's some good stuff coming up....

What better month to read Irish literature?  Cathy at 746 Books is hosting Reading Ireland Month!  It just so happens that I recently picked up a copy of The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien, so I'll read that.  Head on over to Cathy's place to see the plans.


Of course, the highlight of March is always March Magics, the event dedicated to Diana Wynne Jones and Terry Pratchett!  Kristen We Be Reading is hosting this year, and the theme is "All the Shorts" -- I'm not sure what I'll do for Pterry, since I read A Blink of the Screen just two years ago.  On the other hand, I can't actually remember most of the stories, so maybe it's time to pick it up again!  And I will undoubtedly just binge right through every single one of DWJ's shorts.  I have all the collections, and I can't wait to read that nightmarish one about the magician and "Dragon Reserve, Home Eight" and "Everard's Ride" again. 


So I hope you will join me for both of these events!  I'm feeling quite excited over the prospect!

    So glad to have you along again this year! I started my DWJ shorts today and WOW, I HATE CHAIR PERSON. I mean, I know the story is incredibly well-written but she wrote that character (and Auntie Christa) to be so horrid that it makes my stomach physically turn to read about him. Oh, I love Diana so much. :)

    Ahahaha, that is exactly what my husband complains about! There are a couple of the short stories that he just cannot stand because the people (or the chairs) are so intolerable. Yeah, I know just what you mean.

  "The Four Ages of Poetry," by Thomas Love Peacock I am becoming fond of Thomas Love Peacock.  Besides his unbeatable name, he was a lot of fun.  Peacock was a minor literary figure of the early 19th century; he tried his hand at poetry but mainly succeeded in satire.  I read his short novel Nightmare Abbey last year, but at the time I didn't know that the young hero of the story, Scythrop, was modeled on Peacock's good friend Percy Shelley.  He and Shelley were quite close and Peacock was the executor of Shelley's will. A few short stories in Urdu

 Back in August, I got hold of a book of Urdu short stories translated into English.  It's a large book, so I wanted to read just the women authors for WIT, and that would still be a good amount.  August got away from me, and I only read one or two stories back then, but I've continued reading them since.  I've now finished all the short stories in the book that were written by women (luckily for me, there are short biographies in an appendix, since I could only tell from the name about half the time).  I'll just highlight a couple: "The Wagon," by Khalida Asghar, is a hallucinatory, apocalyptic story.  The narrator meets three strange men who are watching the evening sky and point out that it has become red.  No one had noticed until they said so, but the sky is now strangely red.  Then a smell arrives, so offensive and sickening that it causes real pain -- but only once it's pointed out.  And finally, a mysterious wagon, which may be the source of the s
